UBC Botanical Garden Wedding | Vancouver, BC | Sanaz + Vince

Weddings / Elopements

Sanaz and Vince wanted a natural, greenery-inspired wedding to match their venue, the stunning UBC Botanical Gardens.

From the bride:

UBC Botanical Garden - the arbour and lawn; From the beginning we wanted an outdoor venue and for both of our ceremony and reception to be at one location. We also wanted a long table dinner, and the arbour was the perfect for both an aisle to walk down in and a perfect location for our reception. The natural beauty and charm of the UBC Botanical Garden were exactly what we envisioned.

Wedding theme and colours (explain the reason behind your decision):
Our wedding theme was botanical, natural and greenery inspired. We took a classic, timeless and minimalist approach with our day and incorporated green, white and gold, with the emphasis on greenery. We went with white for the bridesmaid dresses and white ties for the groom and groomsmen to keep the theme consistent and clean. The bouquets were kept simple and comprised of eucalyptus and white roses.

Describe the top 3 best moments and why (please provide as much detail as possible): 1.) One of the most memorable moments on our wedding day was the rain; Rain was in the forecast for the day but we were lucky that during our photos and ceremony we caught a beautiful glimpse of sunshine. However, during dinner, the rain showed up abruptly and everyone had to evacuate from the arbour and congregate under the tent on the dance floor. We weren’t sure how this would impact the remainder of the day, but  we ended up with the best possible outcome with all of our guests embracing the rain and enjoying themselves with our DJ playing some of our favourite tunes and our open bar.
2.) Another memorable moment was our puppy Peanut walking down the aisle with one of the bridesmaids. He wore a black and white bowtie and looked adorable! Incorporating our dog into our special day was very important for us, and we are grateful he was able to be a part of our wedding.
3.) Another best moment for us was the moment we had our first look in the apartment. I don’t have many words to explain how it felt, but our first look brought tears to both of our eyes.

Describe your top 3 favourite wedding details (cake, flowers, dress, band, etc.) and why (please provide as much detail as possible):
1.) The cultural influences we incorporated into our wedding day were one of our favourite details. We displayed a sofreh aghd, which is a traditional Persian tablescape displaying symbolic items for the couple’s union and new life together to honor Sanaz‘s Iranian roots and also had a Chinese Tea Ceremony to celebrate Vince’s Chinese roots. This really personalized our special day and gave our guests an insight into both of our cultures.
2.) Another great detail of our wedding was the ambiance created for our reception. The arbour was lit with string lights, candles, and a chandelier above our sweetheart table and just walking into the long table al fresco inspired arbour decor was surreal. Our decor company kept it all simple with our wood long tables and no tablecloths, gold chiavari chairs, and greenery table runner. The gold chairs complemented the tabletop decor perfectly.
3.) An important detail I wanted from the beginning was an all white bridal party. I’ve always loved the aesthetic of a neutral look. The bridesmaids scouted their own dresses and they did such an amazing job. Each bridesmaid was able to source a long, pure white chiffon dress and the mismatched looks blended so well together. My vision of a mismatched all white bridal party was perfectly brought to life.

Wedding song (explain choice for song): The bridal party walked down the aisle to All You Need is Love by the Beatles. I walked down the aisle to an a capella of So Much in Love by All 4 One, sung by close friends of ours, including one of my bridesmaids.
We had quotes of “All you need is love” incorporated into our welcome and directional signage, so it all fit so well together.

Anything else you’d like to tell us about?:  Our wedding favors were small succulents. We loved how perfectly they were incorporated into our theme.

Before The Wedding Day

How did you meet?:
We met through a mutual friend at their birthday BBQ at Deer Lake park in the summer of 2014. In fact, the friends who sang “So Much in Love” as I walked down the aisle were the ones we met through. We didn’t initially hit it off at first when we met, but kept in touch for about a year before we started dating. Vince invited me to his birthday party in late 2015, and shortly after we started dating.

What is your engagement story?:
We were taking a walk around Deer Lake Park as we sometimes do with our dog. My brother and sister in law joined us on this day as well. We walked all around the park and I didn’t suspect anything until we walked up to the area where our friend has his birthday BBQ where we met, and Vince got down on one knee and proposed. Then, my sister in law brought out a bottle of champgne and 4 glasses and we celebrated! It still amazes me that she walked the entire walk with all of that in her purse. It was so memorable, the entire experience.
